“Finding solace in unexpected places even a tail-end can offer the warmth of companionship and the softness of belonging.”

Excerpt from So Much to Drool About: Lessons for Living Large – “Using Butts as Pillows”, p. 71

Sometimes the most unexpected places offer the greatest comfort. Where do you go when you need a moment of peace, a source of comfort, or a reminder that you’re not alone?

We often search for solace in the obvious places – a warm bath, a good book, or the company of loved ones. But what if I told you that some of the most powerful sources of comfort lie hidden in plain sight, waiting to be discovered in the everyday moments and unexpected corners of our lives?

In this post, we’ll explore the power of perspective and uncover a range of unconventional sources of comfort, inspiring you to find solace in the most surprising places.

Shifting Your Perspective

Sometimes, finding solace requires looking beyond the obvious, challenging your assumptions, and opening yourself up to the possibility that it might be hiding in plain sight. We often get stuck in routines, searching for comfort in the same familiar places. But true peace can be found when we step outside those well-worn paths and allow ourselves to see things from a different angle.

This shift in perspective can be incredibly powerful. It allows us to break free from the confines of our expectations and discover unexpected sources of comfort and joy. Instead of focusing on what’s missing or what’s wrong, we start to appreciate the beauty and abundance that surrounds us.

For instance, instead of reaching for your phone next time you’re overwhelmed by stress, try stepping outside for a walk. Breathe in the fresh air and feel the sun on your skin. You might find that your worries may fade, replaced by a sense of calm and connection to the world around you. This is just one example of how a shift in perspective can open up a world of possibilities for finding comfort.

Inspiration for Finding Sources of Comfort

Solace isn’t always found in a spa day or a shopping spree. Sometimes, the most comforting experiences are hidden in the everyday, the ordinary, the unexpected. Here are a few ideas to inspire you to seek comfort in new and surprising ways:

Engaging in Repetitive Actions

There’s a reason why activities like knitting and coloring have become so popular – the repetitive motions have an almost meditative quality, allowing your mind to quiet down and your worries to fade. But the power of repetition extends far beyond these creative pursuits.

Folding laundry, weeding a garden, washing dishes, organizing a bookshelf – these seemingly mundane tasks can also offer a surprising sense of calm and contentment. The rhythmic movements and predictable outcomes provide a sense of order and control, which can be especially comforting during times of stress or uncertainty.

When you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, try engaging in a repetitive action. Focus on the task at hand, let your mind wander, and allow the repetition to soothe your soul. You might be surprised at how grounding and restorative these simple actions can be.

Reading Childhood Books

Remember the thrill of getting lost in a good book as a child? The way the words transported you to another world, and the stories filled you with wonder and excitement? Revisiting those beloved childhood books can be like stepping back in time, reconnecting with a part of yourself that may have been forgotten.

Those familiar stories and characters can evoke powerful feelings of nostalgia, comfort, and security. Think about the books you loved as a child. What made them so special? Was it the adventurous plot, the relatable characters, or the beautiful illustrations?

Pick up that worn copy of Corduroy or revisit the magical world of Where the Wild Things Are. Curl up with a cup of tea and let the familiar words transport you back to a simpler time. You might be surprised at how much comfort and joy those childhood classics can still bring.

Connecting with Animals

In the above excerpt from So Much to Drool About, we saw how two Great Danes found comfort and connection in a simple cuddle. This heartwarming scene reminds us of the unique bond between humans and animals and the incredible power they have to soothe our souls.

Animals offer unconditional love, companionship, and a sense of connection that can be incredibly soothing. Whether it’s cuddling with your cat, playing fetch with your dog, or simply observing the birds in your backyard, spending time with animals can be a powerful way to de-stress and find a moment of peace.

Enjoying a Warm Beverage

Think about that first sip of coffee in the morning, or the way a cup of tea warms you from the inside out on a chilly afternoon. There’s something undeniably comforting about a warm beverage, and it goes beyond just the taste.

It’s the feeling of the warm mug in your hands, the soothing aroma that fills the air, and the gentle warmth that spreads through your body as you take a sip. Whether it’s a creamy latte, a fragrant herbal tea, or a decadent hot chocolate, a warm beverage can be a simple yet powerful source of comfort.

So the next time you’re feeling stressed or seeking a moment of peace, take a break and savor a warm drink. Pay attention to the sensations – the warmth, the aroma, the taste – and allow yourself to be fully present in the moment. It might be just the thing you need to relax and recharge.

Taking a Long Drive

Sometimes, the best way to find solace is to escape the confines of your daily routine and hit the open road. There’s a sense of freedom and adventure that comes with a long drive, a chance to clear your head and leave your worries behind.

The changing scenery, the open sky, and the rhythm of the road can be incredibly therapeutic. It’s an opportunity to disconnect from the demands of daily life and reconnect with yourself.

Choose a scenic route, explore a new area, or simply enjoy the journey without a specific destination in mind. Roll down the windows, turn up the music, and let the road lead you to a place of peace and tranquility.

Revisiting a Familiar Place

Places can hold a strong emotional connection for us. Maybe it’s your childhood home, a park you used to visit, or a café where you spent time with friends. Going back to these familiar places can be comforting. The sights, sounds, and even smells can bring back memories and feelings of joy, nostalgia, and peace.

Think about the places that are meaningful to you. Where do you feel most comfortable and at ease? Take some time to revisit these places. Reflect on the memories they hold and the experiences you’ve had there. You might be surprised at how relaxing it can be to reconnect with these meaningful spaces.

Taking a Digital Detox

These days, it’s easy to get caught up in the constant stream of information, notifications, and demands on our attention. This constant connection to technology can be overwhelming, leading to stress, anxiety, and a sense of being constantly “on.”

Taking a break from technology, even for a short period, can be incredibly refreshing. Disconnecting from devices allows you to clear your head, recharge your batteries, and reconnect with the world around you. You might be surprised at how much more present and focused you feel when you’re not constantly bombarded with digital distractions.

Try setting aside specific times for a digital detox, such as an evening or a weekend. Put away your phone, turn off the TV, and resist the urge to check email or social media. Instead, spend time engaging in activities that nourish your mind and soul – read a book, go for a walk, have a meaningful conversation, or simply enjoy the quiet. You might find that a digital detox is just what you need to find a sense of peace and balance in your life.

Embrace the Unexpected, Open Yourself to Solace

As we’ve explored in this post, solace can be found in the most surprising places. From the rhythmic motions of folding laundry to the nostalgic comfort of a childhood book, the possibilities are endless. The key is to be open to new experiences, challenge your assumptions, and embrace the unexpected.
